Dana, where in the paper does it describe the program assessment? I can't find it. How will they know whether or not this works?

Dana, As a parent of children in Harrison school district, your article is dead on. Thank you for exposing the truth. My daughter just this morning said, mommy, I got three F's on test because we didn't even have a chance to learn the material. We had to hurry up and go through it really fast and then test. I am against the pay for performance as my son has an IEP. My thought is that a teacher may push him through so to increase her performing students in order to be paid better. I credit Miles with change in the district but the way he went about it was sneaky and wrong and yes he made change but at the sacrifice of many good staff members. Dallas, enjoy…he is all yours.

Jersey, the Fordham paper does not include program assessment, but Harrison is the recipient of a federal Teacher Incentive Fund grant, and most likely would have had to describe some sort of program assessment process to win that. Check out my story in The American Prospect to see some of the stats on how test scores have changed in the district since Harrison implemented the plan.

Harrison mom, thank you so much for your comment. Not enough attention is paid to how testing mandates affect students with special needs.

This is sad and, unfortunately, the direction in which public education is headed. As a teacher myself, I can attest to the misrepresentation of student growth that standardized tests project and the detrimental effect of evaluation measures like these on real learning in the classroom. Thanks for sharing.
